Originally developed by Synergistic Software and released back in 1997, the Hellfire expansion was not a product created by Blizzard and did not carry their endorsement or branding. However, in response to countless requests from devoted fans of diablo 1, Blizzard eventually permitted its inclusion as a complimentary add-on bundled together with the base game purchase.

Hellfire offers a non-canonical single-player campaign in which the player must face the formidable demon Na-Krul, who threatens the town of Tristram. The expansion introduces:

- A new class — the Monk.

- Unique weapons and special items.

- Additional quests, locations, dungeons, and fearsome enemies.

Beneath Tristram, a terrible darkness stirs and awakens. An ancient evil spreads across the land, plunging it into the chaos of civil war and sowing dread in the hearts of all who dwell there.
